Fire Rate is the maximum rate at which a gun is able to put rounds down range. This number is usually measured in rounds per minute.

Note that the rate of fire reported for weapons assumes constant fire and perfect reloading-which means that the instant the last round leaves the barrel, your reload animation begins, and fire resumes the instant the animation is done. For single-fire and burst-fire weapons, this rate is obtained by assuming each shot or burst is fired the instant it is available, and the same reload assumptions as previously stated.

This statistic is not the end-all be-all, as many incorrectly think. An auto-rifle may have a higher rate of fire than a machine gun, but the magazine of an auto-rifle is also much smaller than a machine gun's, and the rounds it fires will usually be less powerful, so a player using an auto-rifle will have to place each round much more carefully than one who is using a machine gun. While many see this as a means of balancing weapons, it is also a means of keeping games realistic.
